Block 12, My Territory, My Dignity
2010-2011
Block 12 is a block of one-room HDB flats in Singapore, which was built to provide a living space for individual elderly residents who have financial difficulties. The unit is designed in a way that people are able to see everything once they step into the house. It is interesting to see how individuals present themselves by how they decorate and organize their houses. The residents have led long lives and at their age, they no longer have the pretensions and cares of their youth, and as such, the raw edges of their true personality emerge. The way the houses are designed shows their personality; the residents organize their space with their dignity, even though they do not have much money to spend decorating or furnishing it. By taking a look at their living arrangements, people are able to see their characters clearly without having to know the residents.
